On 14.10.2025 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within BI/BO platform.

SAP Note 3617142 addresses "[CVE-2025-31672] Deserialization Vulnerability in SAP BusinessObjects (Web Intelligence and Platform Search)" to prevent insecure deserialization with a low risk for exploitation.

A workaround does not exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance, the team suggests.

Risk specification

SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence and Platform Search allow an authenticated attacker to upload maliciously crafted Excel files, resulting in manipulation of document metadata and structure.

Solution

The issue has been fixed by updating the Apache POI library to a secure version, ensuring safe parsing and indexing of Excel files through additional validation.

SAP BI is a module meant for producing business insights and expands its power in combination with HANA DB and also exists as BW/4 HANA.
